Baby Stretching: Simple Moves to Support Rolling, Sitting & Crawling

Your baby is moving more every day—reaching, rolling, squirming, kicking. But those small wiggles? They’re doing big work.

Between 3 and 12 months, your baby’s body is learning how to balance, shift weight, and explore space. Gentle stretching and playful movement can support these milestones while creating more chances to connect.

You don’t need a mat or a schedule. Just a few minutes here and there during diaper changes, playtime, or transitions can help your baby feel confident in their body.

Here are a few simple ways to support your baby’s movement milestones through stretching, balance, and touch:

Raise baby’s arms overhead, then slowly lower them back down. Keep it soft and rhythmic.

How this helps: Strengthens shoulders and trunk control while supporting early coordination.

When to try it: During diaper changes, before getting dressed, or post-nap as a gentle wake-up.

Circle each wrist gently and wiggle or open/close fingers while narrating: “Roll, roll, roll… wiggle, wiggle!”

How this helps: Encourages sensory awareness and prepares for grasping and fine motor control.

When to try it: After feedings, while singing, or as part of your morning routine.

Tap the bottoms of their feet or gently squeeze and count each toe.

How this helps: Supports lower-body activation, sensory input, and foot awareness (key for crawling and standing).

When to try it: After diaper changes or before putting on socks and shoes.

With baby on their back, hold their feet and gently rock them side to side.

How this helps: Encourages hip flexibility and helps baby discover midline movements.

When to try it: After bath or tummy time, when baby is already lying down and calm.

While baby is on their tummy, use light touch to circle shoulders or trace gentle figure-eights.

How this helps: Adds sensory input and builds tolerance for tummy time.

When to try it: Toward the end of a tummy time session or when baby seems restless but alert.

With baby sitting (with support if needed), help them turn to one side and then the other while pointing to objects.

How this helps: Strengthens balance, trunk control, and visual engagement.

When to try it: During playtime with toys, books, or mirrors nearby.

Sit with baby facing you and bounce gently or sway side to side while singing or narrating.

How this helps: Builds rhythm, core strength, and bonding through movement.

When to try it: After feeding, during music time, or while waiting in a calm moment.

Always follow your baby’s cues. If they stiffen, resist a movement, or turn away, pause and try something else, or try again later. These stretches aren’t goals to complete, they’re invitations to connect.

You can always ease into movement with a song, a cuddle, or simply lying down together and seeing what your baby is ready for. Let them lead. You’re just there to support.

This stage is full of big movement milestones but it’s the small, quiet moments that build them.

Gentle stretching isn’t about doing more. It’s about tuning in and offering your baby time, space, and touch, as they grow into their body. A little stretch. A little sway. A little rhythm and regulation.

At Snack & Story Co., we believe meaningful development begins in moments like these—when your baby feels safe, seen, and supported in their skin. No pressure. Just presence.
