Toddler Stretching: Morning Moves to Start the Day with Energy & Connection

Your toddler may be full of energy the moment they wake up, or they may need a little help easing into the day. Either way, simple movement rituals can help them feel grounded in their body, regulate energy, and prepare for play.

You can do them all or pick just one. These stretches are gentle invitations—ways to pause, connect, and move together. Mix and match, or turn one into a quick movement break when your toddler needs to wiggle before breakfast.

Invite them in with simple phrases: “Want to stretch with me?” or “Let’s shake out our sleepy arms!”

Here are a few simple stretches to help your toddler wake up, stretch out, and get ready to play:

Reach together up to the sky, then slowly lower arms down like a falling leaf.

How this helps: Builds body awareness, supports imitation, and encourages slow, intentional movement.

When to try it: Right after waking or before heading to the breakfast table.

Shake hands, feet, arms, and legs with a fun rhythm: “Shake, shake, shake—and freeze!”

How this helps: Releases extra energy, increases circulation, and encourages rhythm.

When to try it: After dressing, before leaving the house, or as a movement break before sitting down.

Reach up and gently bend to one side, then the other. Add a little wiggle while you’re there.

How this helps: Supports flexibility, core awareness, and coordination.

When to try it: Mid-morning or after a long time in the car seat or high chair.

March in place or lift knees to touch hands while standing.

How this helps: Strengthens balance and coordination; preps the body for active play.

When to try it: During a morning song, while brushing teeth, or right before heading out.

Roll shoulders forward and back slowly. Add a silly song or sound effect.

How this helps: Builds awareness of upper body and supports self-regulation.

When to try it: During a quiet moment before play or while transitioning to a new activity.

Your toddler may have big energy or big resistance in the mornings—both are normal. Follow their lead. Keep movements short and playful, and don’t worry about doing every stretch. If they prefer running in circles or crawling under the table, go with it. Movement is the goal (and so is connection).

A few gentle stretches can go a long way toward starting the day with connection, coordination, and calm. Whether you build them into your toddler’s wake-up routine or sprinkle them in before breakfast or heading out for the day, the key is presence (not perfection).

At Snack & Story Co., we believe the most important routines are the ones you enjoy together. Your toddler doesn’t need a perfect plan to thrive—just a playful start and someone to share it with.
