From the very first diaper change to the daily bedtime tuck-in, your voice is one of your child’s most powerful learning tools.
Even before your baby can speak, they’re soaking up language—through your tone, your rhythm, your facial expressions, and the words you use in the everyday. And as they grow into toddlerhood? That everyday language becomes the foundation for how they think, communicate, and connect.
The good news?
You don’t need flashcards or apps or fancy prompts.
You just need to talk through what you’re already doing.
What is Narration?
Narration is simply the practice of saying out loud what’s happening as it happens.
It sounds like:
- “Here come your socks—one foot in, now the other!”
- “You pointed to the banana. Want more banana?”
- “We’re pouring the milk. Splash, splash. All done!”
It gives your child the vocabulary, structure, and emotional cues they need to understand their world and eventually talk about it, too.
Why It Matters
- Babies learn language through repetition, rhythm, and context. When you narrate routines, they hear the same words in the same settings again and again. That’s how meaning sticks.
- Toddlers need language modeled, not quizzed. Narration shows them what to say before expecting them to say it.
- Everyday routines are full of real-life, emotionally meaningful moments. These are the moments that build language best—not performance tasks.
When you talk your child through washing hands, waiting in line, or pouring cereal, you’re not just getting through the day. You’re building their brain—one word, one moment, one connection at a time.
